Why Per-Device Testing Beats Periodic Audits for Refurbishment Quality

Most quality standards in the refurbishment industry — and in manufacturing generally — work the same basic way: an independent body audits your process periodically, typically once or twice a year, checks that your documented procedures are being followed, and issues a certification that's valid until the next audit. This is a well-established, legitimate model, used by everything from ISO 9001 to sector-specific refurbishment and data-erasure standards. It's also, structurally, a snapshot — not a guarantee about every single unit.

What periodic audits actually verify

An audit-based certification checks that your process meets a standard, generally by reviewing documentation, procedures, and a sample of output at the time of the audit. That's a genuinely valuable thing to verify — a company with no documented process at all is a real risk, and audit certifications weed that out effectively.

But by design, an audit happening twice a year means the vast majority of individual devices that leave your operation were never directly checked by the auditor. The certification tells a buyer "this company's process, as observed at audit time, meets the standard" — not "this specific device, with this specific serial number, was individually verified."
