The practical risk with an i3-tier processor isn't that it "doesn't work" — it's that it works adequately in first year and increasingly strains as your coursework gets heavier in later years, right when you have the least time and money to deal with replacing it.
Why this matters even more for refurbished specifically
With a new laptop, you're choosing specs fresh. With a refurbished laptop, you're often choosing from what's available in the used or corporate-return market — which means the smart move is prioritising RAM and CPU tier over cosmetic condition or brand, since those two specs are what actually determine whether the laptop still feels capable in your final year, not just on the day you buy it. A cosmetically pristine laptop with 8GB of RAM and an i3 processor will frustrate you far sooner than a slightly scuffed one with 16GB and an i5.
What to actually check when buying
